Sesquicentennial Events & Projects --please check back often for updates!
Wednesday, April 5 - Wednesday, April 19 Wagon Train
From the time of California's Gold Rush, individuals, families and ethnic communities have made their way to the Central Valley looking for new opportunities. We've chosen to begin the Sesquicentennial celebration by commemorating this journey, sending a group of covered wagons filled with school children on a trip through the County. Starting off in Firebaugh on April 5 the covered wagons will make their way from town to town, arriving on April 19 at the historic Sante Fe Depot, along with the Wells Fargo stagecoach.

Wednesday, April 19 The Official Kick-off
Fresno County was created April 19, 1856. The immigrant story is one of the most interesting aspects of Fresno County history. A special ceremony will take place that includes a roll call of the communities in the County and a 150-second MOMENT OF SILENCE.

March-April & September-November Lecture Series
To provide a more academic complement to the celebratory components of the Sesqui, a lecture series will be staged. The series will address some of the broader themes associated with the history of the County including its early inhabitants, water, agriculture and immigration.

Mid - September Concert in the Park
Concerts in the park were traditionally very much a part of cultural and social life in the County. Many outdoor concerts occurred in Courthouse Park over the years, which brought together residents from throughout the County. We hope to stage a special concert in Kearney Park, probably in mid - September.

September Film & Book
It's important we know what it is that we're celebrating this year as a County . . . what it is that makes this region extraordinary. Two projects are underway that will help accomplish this: a photo book, and a 60-minute film, both of which focus on Fresno County over the last 150 years.

Saturday, September 30 Parade
Parades were an important way residents of Fresno County came together to celebrate, especially in the early 20th century. One parade in particular, the Raisin Day parade, was not only extraordinary by Fresno County standards, but became one of California's best parades.
The Sesquicentennial Parade planned for Saturday, September 30, promises to be a grand countywide event, reminiscent of Fresno's early and mid-century parades.
