“Celebrating the Journey”

Wednesday, April 19 - 11:00 AM
Covered wagon in field

Four covered wagons, the Wells Fargo Stagecoach, horse-drawn buggies, and horseless carriages will make their way to the historic Santa Fe Depot in downtown Fresno on Wednesday, April 19. Why the 19th? Because April 19 is the day Fresno County was created in 1856. The theme of the Sesqui is “Celebrating the Journey” and we are gathering at a train depot because it is the place where so many first set foot in Fresno County.

-- Who will attend? The Fresno County Board of Supervisors, State and Federal elected officials; Mayors, City Managers and other dignitaries from each community within the County. Governor Schwarznegger has also been invited to join the festivities.

-- The Wells Fargo Stagecoach will arrive first, delivering the County Board of Supervisors to the Plaza of the Santa Fe Depot.

-- The four covered wagons that will have been traveling throughout the County will arrive at the Santa Fe Depot shortly after the stagecoach. Riding the wagons will be the last group of thirty 5th graders and walking behind the wagon train will be the other 270 students who participated in the event, reminding us that so many have made the journey to the Central Valley over the years . . . some by wagon, some by stagecoach, some by train.

-- MOMENT OF SILENCE - At High Noon, everyone at the Depot will be invited to join others throughout the County of Fresno for 150 seconds of silent reflection, one second to honor each year of Fresno County’s history. Arrangements are being made for a solitary church bell in every community to ring twice to signal the beginning of the moment of silence, concluding with the pealing of all bells across the County.

-- Mayors, City Managers or their representatives will participate in a roll call of the communities within the County following the 150 seconds of silence.

-- Period brass and string will play. Horse-drawn buggies and horseless carriages will help set the scene. Lunch will be available for purchase.
