WAGON TRAIN
Sesquicentennial Wagon Train
Wednesday, April 5 – Wednesday, April 19
What’s happening?
Bill Coate, Coordinator of the Sesquicentennial Wagon Train, will take
several groups of school children on a wagon train adventure through
Fresno County. The experience will focus on what it was like for those
who made their way to the Valley by covered wagon. It will also highlight
the history of early County settlement.
Four covered wagons, pulled by mules, will make their way through the County traveling from town to town (see schedule) carrying 30 fifth graders. A different group of students will make the journey each day. Come watch the Wagon Train Pull into your community!
The Madera Method
- The Madera Method Wagon Train is a volunteer organization that has
been functioning since 1993, as an educational program that brings local
and state history alive for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.
Participating students spend time out on the trail in an attempt to gain a measure of historical empathy for pioneer life. Their sojourn through history takes them to rural Fresno County where they leave civilization and experience what life was like for the early settlers in the area. They help cook their own food, gather wood, feed and water the animals, and learn to drive the mule-drawn wagons. In the process, they gain the experience of a lifetime.
Throughout their trek, the students will enjoy a unique curriculum specially designed for the Sesquicentennial event.
