SELMA
April 10 – 11
Indianola Elementary School

SELMA was established on June 26, 1880 with an auction sale of lots by its founders, Jacob E. Whitson, George B. Otis, Monroe Snyder and E.H. Tucker. The next task was to lay out the town so County Surveyor Caleb Davis began the process. In the same year, the first business was established by the Frey brothers -- the Selma Flour Mill -- which was located on the Selma Branch of the Centerville and Kinsgburg Canal.

The town began to grow and in 1893, Selma was incorporated --the second city in Fresno County to achieve this distinction. Although there has been some debate, local historians feel that the city was named for Selma Michelsen Kingsbury Latimer. Selma was the wife of Sanford Kingsbury, an assistant of A.N. Towne, the general superintendent of the Central Pacific Railroad. It was Towne who suggested the new city be named for her.

Today, Selma is a charming city with a downtown filled with restored historic buildings. Set amid orchards and vineyards, Selma’s nickname is the “Home of the Peach.” It is also an important raisin center.
